The BrixtonMarket.com Project offers an intimate response to Brixton's ever-changing street market. [MORE]
Though open to political and socio-economic interpretation these photographs are firstly an account of the beauty in the hidden, the ignored and the forgotten. Using a 24mm lens to produce a large canvas, I orchestrate the everyday into photographs that ask us to consider even the most humdrum of locations as important. The fall of the light, the serendipity of the discarded, the grime and the decrepitude of under-investment, all help to paint this little corner of London as truly special.
The rapid changes Brixton is experiencing stand in stead for the entire capital. Local communities are being elbowed aside by more powerful interests; replacing traditions of belonging that have prevailed for generations. In its wake new development seeks to construct community, contriving authenticity where only commodity now excels. The BxM series offers a rejoinder to the imperative of money; it celebrates the vibrancy of place, of the power of belonging over the sheen of that which would replace it, of a grass roots energy that provides the dynamism that is Made in Brixton.
Inherent in these photographs is nostalgia, the time of a more carefree youth. This series can also be read as the photographers struggle with his own transition into middle life, the fading of a dimly lit past summoned by the recording of old forms, a yearning for what was never comprehended and a resistance to the inevitability of change.
